As China's earliest national, comprehensive, and continuous academic social survey project , the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) began in 2003 and is run year-round by the China Survey and Data Center (NSRC) of Renmin University of China. .

From 2003 to 2023, CGSS conducted a total of sixteen annual surveys and successfully interviewed 172,036 people nationwide using questionnaires. According to the charter, each annual data should be released on the official website of the China National Survey Data Archive (CNSDA) two years after the completion of the survey, for free use by all sectors of society. Currently, all data from 2003 to 2021 are available open.

It can be said that CGSS has witnessed and recorded the development path and achievements of China’s social modernization construction with its high-quality and continuous data .

2023 is the 20th year since the launch of CGSS. For this reason, NSRC specially organized the "China General Social Survey (CGSS) Data Analysis and Visualization Competition", hoping to reflect the changes, changes, development and progress of Chinese people and Chinese society through CGSS data over the years. , use data to study Chinese issues, summarize China’s path, and tell Chinese stories .

01 Competition questions & data

Based on the data collected from CGSS surveys over the years, a longitudinal analysis and comparison is conducted to show the changes in attitudes, concepts, behaviors, etc. of Chinese people in recent years, in order to reflect the changes in Chinese society - the changes in people's lifestyles and the improvement of living standards, and reflect the changes in Chinese society . Achievements in the construction of characteristic socialist modernization.

Entries can specifically start from the following aspects :

  • Through diachronic analysis of multiple time points and multi-faceted variables, the changes and trends of Chinese society are demonstrated;

  • It can be further refined on the basis of multi-time point diachronic analysis, subdividing different groups such as urban and rural areas, gender, age, social class, etc., focusing on reflecting the changes and development of different social groups, and further differentiated analysis can be carried out from other dimensions. ;

  • Select CGSS module data at two points in time to conduct thematic analysis of ten-year changes, such as family (2008, 2018), environment (2011, 2021), globalization (2008, 2018), etc.;

  • Select the International Social Survey Cooperation Project (ISSP) module in CGSS and combine the ISSP data to conduct cross-national horizontal analysis and comparison.

02 Contest prize setting

03 Use the ModelWhale platform to complete online data analysis

As a co-organizer, Hewhale Technology provides full support for this competition. After the contestants complete the registration on the Hewhale community event platform, they can conduct online data analysis through ModelWhale, a data science collaboration platform connected to the event platform. It is ready-to-use and free of charge . , while supporting players to freely use sufficient computing power resources provided by Hewhale in the cloud .

04 Work submission & review

This competition is only open to current students (regardless of junior college, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees) to participate as individuals or in teams (no more than five people).

The competition requires contestants to submit their works in PDF file format, with both pictures and text, including text analysis and visual charts, reflecting the sense of data and analysis in the work. The work document must include: research objectives and content, research data support, research technical route, research results, and research summary .

Both the preliminary round and the finals are subjectively reviewed by judges. The review criteria are divided into five dimensions, namely: data abundance (20%), analysis structure (20%), problem understanding (15%), technical means (25%), and presentation. Effect (20%) .

05 Competition Registration & Schedule

Registration steps:

  • New user registration needs to register a Hejing account, and conduct mobile phone verification and real-name authentication at the same time;

  • Click the "Registration" button on the Hewhale event details page and fill in the registration information as required;

  • After completing the registration, the Hewhale system will automatically create a team. Click "My Team" in the "Team" section to view the current members of the team;
