It’s my first time to draw in 2019. I would like to comment on the pros and cons of iPad Pro and Surface for drawing.

It's a rare day off. In addition to playing the guitar, I also paint.

I also posted the painting process for everyone to see:

Next, let’s talk about the tools for painting.

I use iPadPro2 10.5-inch + Apple Pencil to draw.

At first I planned to use Surface Go to draw. I thought, before I used Wocam drawing board + PhotoShop to draw. Surface can draw directly on the screen, so it should be easier to use. A few months after I bought the Surface Go, I hadn’t used the pen much, so I gave it a try.

The result is still very different from what you imagined. First of all, Photoshop requires various shortcut keys to coordinate with the painting. For example, switching brush tools, selecting boxes, filling colors, scaling brush sizes, selecting colors, etc. are all done through keyboard shortcuts, but If the keyboard is connected, the Surface can only be placed vertically like a laptop, which is not easy to bear. If the keyboard is disassembled, the shortcut keys cannot be used. This is not like the Wocam drawing board, which can also customize several shortcut keys.

Then I discovered that Surface’s touch support for Photoshop is almost 0, and it cannot be zoomed or rotated. It can only be operated with the mouse and keyboard.
After drawing for a while, I gave up and switched to using the iPad Pro I was used to, and I finished the drawing smoothly. I use the paid version of SketchBook as my drawing software on iPadPro.

Functionally speaking, Sketch only has simple brush functions and some functions for panning and copying layers, but no complex filter functions. Therefore, drawing on iPad Pro can only be done one stroke at a time. However, since Sketch is a cross-platform touch painting software and is very mature, it is very friendly to touch operations. You can zoom and rotate at will, and the various buttons are also very easy to use, so the experience is much better than using Photoshop.

Is Surface not suitable for drawing? Since I haven’t bought any good drawing software, I don’t dare to make a final conclusion. Maybe there will be useful software on the Surface. However, as a tablet computer, the Surface is far inferior to the iPad, so I don’t have high hopes.

But Surface still has its unique features. For example, when writing this article, I only choose Surface to do it. Although there are also various word processing software and image processing software on iOS. But when it comes to actual use, the Windows versions of Word and Photoshop are the best. So now I can draw on the iPad, and then collect all the resources on the Surface and organize them.

Yes, so now I always take two computers with me when I go out, a Surface Go and an iPad Pro. But what’s the problem? The two units add up to just over 2 pounds, which is much lighter than most laptops.
