The Rise and Fall of an Industry: Do testers in the communications industry regret entering the wrong line?

What do readers in front of the screen think about the rise and fall of an industry? Very realistically speaking, the industry we are in is directly related to everyone's income. In different life cycles of the industry, the money we get will be different. Let me give you an example from my industry.

work experience

Entered the communication industry for the first time

Let’s start with when I entered the communications industry: Around 2007, China’s communications industry had matured, and although foreign communications companies still had a large share, the decline was already underway. Around the fall of 2007, I entered the first communication equipment manufacturer, which also fulfilled one of my dreams: being able to enter a communication company. This is a very difficult road for a non-communication major.

I remember that on the first day I joined the job, I went to HR to report, and then I went to IT to get a computer. After the department leader picked me up, I introduced them to the department colleagues one by one. After I was assigned a seat, I found that I had nothing to do. Opening the computer mailbox, I was instantly confused: RRC connect, MAC, PHY, BCCH... What the hell is written in the email?

I knew every word in the email, and the combination was a heavenly book, so I had to find a colleague and ask him to borrow a book. Later I learned that this book was the so-called TD-SCDMA Bible at that time. Gradually, I learned about ATM, RNC, and NodeB series of communication knowledge, and I also knew what 3GPP protocol is called. I found more detailed knowledge from these protocols, and then I could build a whole set of communication equipment from scratch until able to do business.

During the period, there were various rumors about 3G: some people said that TD licenses would be issued by the end of 2007, and others said that 2008 at the latest... Finally, in 2009, 3G licenses were finally issued (historically known as China 3G first year). The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a document stating that China Mobile is TD-SCDMA, China Unicom is WCDMA, and China Telecom is CDMA2000.

At that time, the most popular should be China Unicom, because Unicom and Apple will cooperate to launch the Iphone contract machine. Although parallel imports of Iphones have appeared in Beijing's Zhongguancun before this, the price is about 9,000, but the contract phone is still very attractive. I personally think that in the 3G era, China Unicom has a great advantage. If someone has used TD-SCDMA, they will know that the speed of Internet access is incomparable with WCDMA, so that China Mobile will come up with various methods to increase the user share of TD-SCDMA, but there is still no way to improve the mobile 3G word of mouth.

At that time, communication companies had already tended to integrate into the sunset, but everyone still yearned to work in communication companies. For example, if you go to Huawei or a foreign company, the reason for going to Huawei is largely for stocks and wages. At that time, Huawei's salary was already very high, and it could also buy internal shares. For those employed in foreign companies, the pace of work is relatively slow, and the income was considered acceptable at the time, and they could definitely buy a house or a car.

To make a digression, the domestic communication industry 996 had already appeared at that time. Thanks to the undeveloped mobile Internet at that time , relevant information would not be frequently searched like it is now.

Because the company I was working at was a state-owned enterprise, many fresh graduates were very willing to go, because it was 100% possible to obtain a Beijing hukou. This attraction is very large, and the cost of default is also very low, it can be said that there is almost no cost of default. With a similar idea, everyone came to the central enterprise to settle the Beijing household registration, and then jumped out. Of course, some people will stay there forever.

In 2019, I went back to my old company to find my colleagues, and found that a large part of the old people were still there, and most of them were already at the manager level. Everyone should be able to understand this, the probability of central enterprises is very stable.

If someone asks me do I regret leaving? This matter is divided into two parts:

Yes, I have some regrets, if I don’t leave, I will also enter the management team, and I may die forever;

I don't regret it, because the wages were too low at that time. If I didn't leave, I couldn't buy a house and pay the down payment.

Because of 3G, some Internet companies on the market began to turn to the mobile Internet. It should be around 2011. I installed the Taobao APP on my mobile phone for the first time . At that time, most people were still using the web version. Taobao, I remember that JD.com’s APP was also launched during this period. The mobile phone models that everyone used at that time were much richer than the current models: Nokia, Motorola, Iphone, LG, Samsung, Dopod (HTC), and many other models. Not listed. Everyone installed Taobao APP out of curiosity, and found that it is so difficult to use, but the web version is easy to use... This should be the beginning of the mobile Internet.

The first foreign company

Later, a large number of colleagues left the company. I will not go into details for each reason, but I also started another journey. After leaving the first company, I found a company that was at the peak level in the field of communication equipment through headhunting. I was still very excited: no need to work overtime on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 955 working hours, various snacks and drinks in the tea room (According to the old employees, it is not like before, "I think it was more comfortable" than now), and the most important thing is that the salary has increased a lot, and the colleagues are also very friendly. The author of a well-known communication book can be contacted to ask questions, and everything seems to be perfect.

And I can practice English and chat with colleagues from English-speaking countries with various accents, but the good times didn’t last long. After about a year, the department’s projects suddenly decreased, and I started looking for another opportunity.

The second foreign company

In this way, I ended my work in the first foreign company and came to the second foreign company, which is also a communication equipment manufacturer. This is already 2013, 4G has blossomed everywhere, and various Internet companies have sprung up like mushrooms, but I still continue to linger in the sunset industry of communication equipment. Therefore, tolerance to oneself is irresponsible to oneself. Grab a big opportunity, and your space will expand a lot in an instant.

After staying in this company for about four years, there have been rumors of various mergers and rumors in the past four years. Finally, in the fourth year, in a certain month, the CEO personally sent an email saying that our company is very good and will not be merged into any company; the next month, the CEO sent an email saying that we are very happy to merge with a certain company, merged Let's go later...

I couldn't see any benefit, so I just kept on wandering. Just in the middle of 2019, I heard from my former colleagues that the entire merged department was laid off, and the compensation was N+3. After that, I moved to another company.
