As a project manager, what do you think is the most important ability?

As a project manager who has learned from blood and tears, I value the following abilities of project management the most:

1\ Grasp the key and meet the core needs. In a project, different interested parties will be involved, some may put forward false demands to protect their own interests, while others may put forward demands that are really beneficial to the project. So the key is to identify who is the decision maker, who is the ultimate decision maker, and address their needs. Only when the needs of the final decision maker are met can the project be considered half successful. If you only focus on the lower level employees and ignore the needs of the upper level, it will eventually lead to failure

2\Reporting ability is one of the main tasks of the project manager. It is necessary to regularly report the progress of the project to the client of Party A and the leader of Party B, and ask questions to promote the completion of the project on time. If the report is not in place, Party A may think that your project control ability is insufficient and lose trust, so that once the project is delayed, the responsibility will all fall on you. Therefore, we need to gain the trust of Party A through reporting, and coordinate the relationship with the leaders internally, so that we can get bonuses and opportunities for promotion.

3\ Improving balance is important. While the ability to balance is somewhat abstract, it exists. In project management, a balance needs to be struck among quality, cost, and speed. When customers put forward more needs, we need to meet customer needs within a reasonable cost range, but not exceed the cost, otherwise the leaders will be dissatisfied, thinking that we have not controlled the demand well, resulting in rising costs and no profits. At the same time, the R&D team will complain that we make them work too much overtime, and some customers will complain that we are not fast enough. Failure to balance these aspects can eventually lead to physical and mental burnout.

These are the three most important competencies in my opinion
