【Beginner Tutorial】How to make a desktop that imitates MacOS on Win11?

The reason is that when I was squatting in the morning, I stumbled across an article on Xiaohongshu by accident . After reading the renderings, I felt that it was not bad, so I followed the process of the author of the article. I also encountered some minor problems in the process, so I just wrote an article to record it when I was on vacation. First put the effect:

1. Create the lower Dock bar

What is the Dock column? As a user who is not familiar with the Apple operating system, it is normal not to have seen this word. The Dock bar is somewhat similar to the task bar in Windows, which refers to the row of programs at the bottom of the screen in the above picture. The Dock bar also exists at the bottom of iOS and iPadOS.

1.1 Install Nexus

The software needed to create the Dock is called Nexus . It needs to be explained here that there are many other software that can achieve similar functions, but the blogger has only used Nexus. If there is a better software, you are welcome to add it. The official website cannot be searched directly on Baidu, but there are some unofficial download channels. Although it can be downloaded (this is how the blogger downloads it), but for the sake of safety, let me give you the official download address of Nexus: http://www.winstep.net/

After opening the official website, click on the Learn more of Winstep Nexus in the middle:

After entering the download page, there is a free version and a paid version. Downloading the free version is enough:

After downloading, you should be able to see the NexusSetup.exe file, double-click to open it and follow the steps to install it.

1.2 Setting up Nexus

After the correct installation, open Nexus and you can see the following interface:

You can see that the Dock bar of Nexus is at the top of the screen by default. In the "Position" tab in the above picture, change "Which edge of the screen does the Dock dock to" to the bottom. At the same time, I found that there are several strange icons on the default Dock bar. In fact, those are some components that come with Nexus, such as CPU meter or something. If you don't want to keep it, just right-click the icon and click "Delete from Dock". The icon will explode for a while and then disappear. The blogger thinks it is too secondary, so he changed the "Delete Effect" to "None" in the "Effects" tab, and then clicked "Effect Settings". Of course, if you regret it and want to add it back, you can also right-click an icon and add your favorite components as shown in the figure below. Then you will find that the component is added after the icon you right clicked .

So how to add the application you want in the Dock bar? The blogger used the method at the beginning: First, right-click the application icon on the desktop, select "Properties", and copy the address in the "Target" column. (Take QQ as an example here)

Right-click a position in the Dock column, select "Insert New Dock Item", and then select the "Project" column; in the "File Name" column (note that it is not the starting position), paste the address you just copied into it, and you will find The starting location column will also be automatically populated, and the app's icon will be automatically displayed.

Then just click OK, and a program is added.

All the blogger’s programs are added one by one in this way. If there are many applications, it will take time, but the final effect is very good. Another way to be lazy is to move the commonly used shortcuts on the desktop to a folder first, and then add this folder to the Dock bar, which is more convenient.

For more basic settings on the Dock bar, please refer to this Zhihu article: Desktop beautification software Nexus - Zhihu , in addition to the above operations, it also includes how to modify the Dock bar to be transparent, how to customize the style, etc. Of course, it will be more comprehensive to look through the content of each tab and try each of them. But note: This article is modeled on MacOS, which is different from the software required in this article (the main difference is the setting of the taskbar). At the same time, I would like to remind everyone that if you do not know how to open Nexus after deleting it from the Dock, you can press Ctrl+F11, which is the default shortcut key for opening Nexus settings, and you can also manually change it to other shortcut keys.

In addition, after the blogger put all the programs on the desktop into the Dock bar, he found that the two sides were almost touching the edge of the screen. There is no beauty without white space. The first solution is to adjust the "How much size do you want to set for the Dock icon" in the "Appearance" tab (pull a bit and click "Apply" to see how it works); the second is to select the "Current Task" tab, Turning "Show running apps in this Dock off" also reduces the length of the bottom Dock bar.

2. Modify the taskbar

In the Windows 11 system, users can no longer set the position of the taskbar by themselves. The method Baidu came up with is to modify the registry, but in fact it is not necessary to be so troublesome at all (there are risks in changing the registry indiscriminately). The blogger is using a plug-in called StratAllBack, the official download address is: StartAllBack - use the unmerged taskbar and the familiar start menu on Win11 (but in fact, the blogger also downloaded it from an unofficial way). The download and installation process is also very easy. Note, however, that the plugin doesn't create a shortcut on the desktop, or even tell you where it installed itself. If you accidentally closed it, the way to reopen it is to right-click the taskbar (or start menu) and select "Properties". This is the interface of StartAllBack:

Click the taskbar item on the left, and change the "screen taskbar position" to the top in the personalized taskbar. Options such as icon centering and task grouping can be customized. It should be noted that the blogger has checked the transparency effect option, and no errors have occurred. However, there are problems with articles shared by netizens on the Internet, so it varies from person to person. In the effect diagram at the beginning of this article, the setting options are as follows:

In addition, by default, StartAllBack modifies the right-click menu of the mouse to the complex menu of Windows 10 and before, rather than the simple version of Windows 11. If you need to modify it, click "Resource Window" on the left, and uncheck "Classic-style right-click menu".

3 Choose a Mac wallpaper for yourself!

The software used in this article is still Wallpaper Engine, just search for "mac" in the creative workshop. My roommate has never played Steam and doesn’t know how to use Wallpaper Engine. His substitute is Vitality Wallpaper. If you have the same friends, you can also try it.
