Will Apple be left behind in the AI world?

Almost every major software developer is full of praise for the progress they've made in AI. Microsoft appears to be the first out of the woods, jumping ahead by launching Bing Chat within their otherwise unremarkable search engine, and more recently co-pilot, an AI assistant deeply integrated into Windows 11.

Not to be outdone, Google has promised to enhance search and their other efforts by using their own artificial intelligence solution, Bard. It promises life hacks for simple tasks like photo enhancements through search recommendations. It has to be said that while Bard may be referencing yesterday's poetic storyteller, to the non-literary literate it seems like the most uninspired staccato name.

Regardless, Apple seems to be going its own way — keeping quiet about AI and focusing instead on mixed reality headsets. Apple has fans all over the world, and it's fair to say their loyalty will ensure that nothing Apple does is an outright failure, but there is a danger that the headphones are too far removed from the market and could leave Apple behind .

It's been suggested that Apple's executive team doesn't think AI is quite ready (or maybe we're not), and may take a backseat as observers before they throw their hat into the ring. The problem is, if users sleep too long in bed with Bard or Copilot, it could be a knot that not even Apple can untangle.

When asked about AI in early May, Cook replied that Apple "will continue to incorporate (AI) into our products on a very thoughtful basis," but notably, he refrained from commenting further.

Apple does a great job of serving its customers, and it dominates the many markets and categories in which they operate, but it could give Google and Microsoft a huge advantage if they are slow to bring AI to market.
