FL Studio 21 includes several updates to the popular DAW and music production software. The most significant changes include: faster, more precise audio envelopes and gain controls with automatic crossfader; a new browser with the ability to tag, make custom-colored labels and access online content, and a Embedded audio player with Wipe and Wipe; interface with customizable themes, brightness contrast, and other aesthetic personalization; new effects boards VFX Sequencer, Multi-band Delay, Vintage Phaser, and LuxeVERB; and support for Chinese, English, German and Spanish.

It's been 5 years since the last major release of FL Studio 20, and the developers haven't been idle for 5 years. They are constantly bringing improvements and new features to make our lives easier.
Various updates were released during this time, all of which brought us closer to the release of FL Studio 21. They created everything from the ground up for this new version, a new, cleaner, more stable core of code. Sounds like a lot of work!
I recently updated to 20.9.2 and have seen some nice tweaks such as quantized song jumps, new effects and multiple playlist track selections.

What's new in FL Studio 21?
Well, we have many new features and improvements, many of which have been requested by the thousands of producers who use this DAW. First, we've improved playlists with selectable tracks, the possibility to clone tracks, MIDI loop recording, new integrations with Newtone, Newtime and Edison plugins, automation that can be edited directly from the main window, and select and move multiple Possibility of automation points, simple and fast.
From the Clip Menu > Shred option, you can now shred mode and automation clips. FL Studio 21 introduces integrated volume envelopes directly in audio clips. You can slice any audio clip multiple times and add unique volume controls to each slice.
For those uploading their productions to music streaming platforms, FL Studio 21 includes a new LUFS / ISP-meter plug-in designed to make optimal adjustments to your mixes for Youtube, SoundCloud, Spotify , Pandora, and more.
The new version also offers new possibilities to customize the interface and change colors.

December 2022 marks FL Studio's 25th birthday, a remarkable milestone for any DAW. In its first incarnation, FruityLoops, it was more of a musical drawing board, but has since evolved into one of the most advanced music production tools around. In 2018, it made the leap to macOS, finally opening up to Apple users after years of Windows-only existence. Image Line has a very generous lifetime free update policy, so this review won't take long to wonder if you should update as an existing user, as doing so is completely free. Instead, we'll look at how FL Studio fits into the world of music technology, and what it can offer new or converting users.

Every DAW has its own workflow, but this applies especially to FL Studio. While most competitors (such as Cubase, Logic Pro, and even Ableton Live) mostly use a fairly traditional timeline-based interface where you record audio and MIDI into layered tracks, more reliance is placed here on model. More generally, FL Studio employs conventions that are not common in other DAWs, so there may be some familiarity if you're switching.

On the left side of the main window is the browser, which contains basically everything: all project templates, samples, MIDI clips, instruments and effects, both stock and third-party. These can be put into channel shelves or playlists differently depending on the type of content. Patterns can be step-sequenced in the Channel Rack, or played and edited in the Piano Roll of any instrument. A pop-up graphical editor is available for entering automation and CC data as well as velocity, release, adjustments, and more. Extensive options are available for generating or importing MIDI patterns.
Switch FL Studio to song mode (from pattern mode) and you can use the linear timeline to arrange various patterns into songs. Audio can also be recorded directly into a track, you'll need to make sure that's set up correctly so it doesn't record into a wrapper - a container that lets you edit clips. All of this is sent to the mixer, which is extremely flexible, using an innovative virtual cable system to show you how the sources are routed. The application uses a windowing system that allows you to freely float, dock and overlap all the different sections and also provides layout presets. This can get really messy on smaller screens if you don't get the hang of it,

Producer Edition comes with a very solid set of Image-Line's own plug-ins that have been built and upgraded over the years. These range from traditional mixing tools like EQ and reverb to instruments like Poizone and Slicex, one of the more specialized inclusions in a DAW that straddles the line between instrument and tool, in this case for You provide a way to split and arrange beats and other material used in the project. Plus, you get Edison, a full-featured recorder and editor that loads into the effects slot. Again, things are handled slightly differently. There are other useful tools too, such as MIDI generators and even visualizers - you can find an exhaustive list on the website, and Image Line keeps some of the biggest plugins for the aptly named All Plugins Edition.

So what else is new in version 21? You can now tweak the DAW visually, there are some funky themes available in the settings, and surprisingly, they look really cool and have several options. You can now set all project data to be saved in unique folders per project, with subfolders for different types of audio. Spanish, French, and German language support has been added, and Apple .m4a files can now be loaded.
In playlists, audio clips get fade and gain controls, meaning you can easily crossfade and change clip gain with your mouse. There are also new plug-ins—LuxeVerb is an advanced algorithmic reverb, Vintage Phaser (Signature Bundle and later) is modeled after a Small Stone pedal, Multiband Delay delays frequency bands individually, VFX Sequencer is a patterned arpeggiator and Step sequencer. Fl Studio is without a doubt one of the most advanced and configurable DAWs around. It also feels super smooth, runs lightning fast on any fairly new Mac or PC, and has a modern, futuristic look and feel. Everything about the interface feels lightweight, which is fine.
At the same time, there are still a lot of menu jumps to deal with. This is partly due to the workflow of it, you have to create a thing and then assign it to another thing and then set your options and so on. If you're used to a DAW that creates instrument tracks > records MIDI, this might take some getting used to. It's also easy to get overwhelmed with options, with so many buttons and right-click menus in nearly every part of the interface. Of course, this is also a result of the enormous flexibility FLS provides, which may hardly be considered a problem by those who are proficient in the software.

While the workflow might be more suited to those used to pattern-based compositing, there's plenty here to suit all kinds of producers once they get used to the conventions and workflow. The selection of effects and instruments available in Producer Edition and above is truly impressive, not only for mixing and sound generation, but also for programming and visual effects. The toolset throughout the application is also very robust, even if they do involve some window juggling, and the level of customization offered is commendable. Even before the free lifetime updates, the Producer Edition is very attractively priced considering what you get. While the workflow may not be for everyone, FL Studio is one of the most flexible and powerful DAWs around, especially for those working with electronic music.
