Microsoft started developing .NET in the late 1990s, when .NET was not called .NET, but "Next Generation Windows Services" (NGWS).

Why Microsoft changed its name is a mystery in itself

.NET made it possible for Microsoft salespeople to announce to the public for the first time that they, too, had their own networking technology, and of course, in a blitz against Sun Microsystems, who claimed "The network is the computer" at the time.

On the other hand, ".com" was also almost synonymous with the web at that time, and ".NET" was an imitation of it. Of course I don't think there's anything wrong with the name, the problem is that Microsoft uses the ".NET" prefix for too many products, like ".NET My Services" and ".NET Enterprise Servers", but the latter has little to do with the Internet relation! The early marketing department thought it was a set of web services. .NET is "assumed" as a tool to simplify designing and using web services.
