How to record the screen with the macOS Screenshot app?

The Screenshot application built into the Apple Mac includes an option to capture a video of everything the user is doing. Screen recording facilitates the presentation process and the creation of shareable instructional videos. This is the method made using the "Screenshot" app.

Steps

1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on the keyboard to open the "Screen Capture" interface.

2. The icons in the second panel (the fourth and fifth buttons from the left) control screen recording, they are similar to the options when taking a static screen snapshot.

Record the entire screen: Start recording everything visible on the screen. When recording, you can switch between Windows and the program, and you can use your Mac as usual.

Record selected part: Drag out a box to specify which part of the screen to record.

Note: You cannot limit the screen recording to a single window as easily as using screenshots. You can draw a box around the window to achieve similar results.

3. Select the recording option you want to use, highlight the part of the screen you want to capture (if necessary), and click the "Record" button at the far right of the screenshot bar.

Press Esc to cancel.

Note: As with still screenshots, you can adjust the selection by holding Shift and moving the box.

4. When capturing the screen with a screenshot, use your Mac as usual. While recording, you can still take screenshots.

5. To stop recording the whole or part of the screen, click the "Stop" button in the menu bar.

Or, reopen the "Screenshot" application by pressing Command + Shift + 5, and then press the "Stop" button to replace the screen capture option.

6. The Mac saves screen recordings and screenshots to the same folder (or any location selected from the "Options" menu). Their names follow the format of "screen recording [date] at [time]".
