What types of Internet products are there?

Today I want to write about the product classification, because during the interview, the interviewer mentioned the difference between common product managers and data product managers

Common product managers mainly design product prototypes and show what functions they want to do.

For the data product manager, it is to be a tool-type product of data type. You need to be familiar with some databases and some data processing methods, and have a technical foundation.

The interviewer suggested that I figure out which direction I want to make. Product managers in different directions require different skills.

I understand what he meant. One is to make application-based products, and the other is to make tool-based products.

Generally speaking, when we talk about product classification, we prefer to talk about classifications like B-end, C-end or government G-end.

The B-side and C-side are only for different groups, and the B-side does not mean a tool-based product.

Products like pdf and word are called tool-based products, and databases are also tool-based products.

WeChat and Douyin are application-based, and enterprise internal platforms are also application-based.

The position of data product manager is really different in different companies.

Some companies think it is a combination of product manager + data analysis skills;

Some companies think they are product managers of data tool products.

Different types of products have different design ideas and different operating methods. Let's classify them according to operating methods.

1. Platform products. Some large shopping websites generally belong to the platform type.

Typical examples are Taobao and some products like taxi-hailing,

This type of platform website needs to consider the factors of supply and demand for the operation of the website platform.

2. Social products. Mainly products that can provide IM real-time communication, voice call, upload picture information and other functions,

WeChat and QQ should be regarded as typical social type products. To make social type products, you also need to choose the way of operation.

Generally, starting a social type product requires a large number of users or a relationship network centered on a certain type of person to be able to build it well.

3. Content products. Some PGC-based products are mostly content-type products.

Zhihu should be regarded as a relatively successful content product, because many people may not be rushing to this product.

It came with high-quality content published by some successful people.

Similar products include Douban and other products. Douban itself has no useful functions. It is the same to look at the posts made by users.

So there was a saying called Douban before that the product itself lies in its users.

4. Product of tool type. There are many types of products of this type.

Some products such as map navigation, beauty cameras, film and television production, and reading products are actually tool-type products in a large part.

The concept of data products, which are popular nowadays, really depends on how you understand it.

What is a data product? Broadly speaking, everything that is driven or core by data is called data products (such as data reporting platforms, DMP, search and precision products, risk control products, etc.), and in a narrow sense, it is the company's internal data platform.

Some people think that products that are used to process data are called data products, such as ETL and query platforms that select filter conditions.

5. Game products. I don’t need to say more about this type of product.

As a group of young people, who doesn't have one or two mobile games on their phones?

Even the current WeChat has many small apps and games built in,

Although it is not an APP product, it can be regarded as an executable game product to some extent.

It is not the purpose to classify software. The current software is more diversified, platform-oriented and specialized.

For example, the built-in content of game mini-applications centered on WeChat, and WeChat reading are more developed based on social-driven products.

And some well-known game products will also have corresponding forums and groups for communication, and use products to promote social interaction, which tends to be an ecological development.

In fact, classifying products is not the goal. The ultimate goal is to formulate different operating methods according to the attributes of their products. This is the ultimate goal.
