At the last moment of 2020, something pleasant has finally happened. The only job I applied for called me for an interview within a week of applying. You know, I didn't have any experience before, and I only studied data science for 3 months.

my story

I started to grasp the concept of data science in early March, when the epidemic broke out in the United States. In the past few years, I have always wanted to learn data science, but I have never been able to do it. I tried various online courses and resources, but unfortunately none of them worked for me. I feel desperate, thinking that I will never understand and master this field.

Until I found that doing some small auxiliary projects, I was able to stick to it. After watching various YouTube tutorials, things finally started to improve. I quickly realized how huge this field is, and there are many things I don't know at all. This makes me feel at a loss and don't know where to start. The road to becoming a data scientist is not straight, we need to create our own path.

How i learned

I remember someone said that the best projects are those related to the topics you are interested in. I think this sentence makes a lot of sense. It will be more interesting to do a project in a field I am familiar with, and I can design unique features in the data.

Not only that, it’s easier to study a project you like than a project that you don’t know much about the background or are not interested in. I am a car enthusiast, so I decided to do a machine learning project to predict the price of used cars.

jobs

I hadn't finished this project at the time. One day, I was browsing LinkedIn and happened to see a job offer for data science. This is a data science position for a well-known company that sells auto parts. Because I am still studying, I am afraid to apply for it. It has more than 200 applicants.

But in the end I still applied, and within a week, they contacted me for an interview.

How did I get the interview opportunity

This should be the part you have been waiting for. I have almost no experience, how can I get a call so quickly? The answer is actually very simple-enthusiasm makes me stand out.

I am a car fan, and it happens that their business is to design and modify car parts to create the ultimate car lover experience. I applied not only because it is a data science job, but also a data science job in a field that I love very much. I already know their business and the exact function (I also bought their products before) .

Soon after applying, I sent a message to the data scientists in their team on LinkedIn and introduced myself. I told him that I applied for the position and I really like their products. It was a pleasant conversation and I strongly recommend that you try to contact the employees of the company you are applying for. A few days later, I received their email asking if I could conduct an online interview.

On the day of the interview, the first thing the interviewer said to me was that the data scientist I had contacted mentioned my name to him and told him that he must talk to me. My enthusiasm and passion for this field attracted their attention, which is what employers like to see.

Although the results were not satisfactory, I could not continue this job because they asked me to move elsewhere. But I am still grateful for the opportunity to participate in an interview at the beginning of my data science career.

So, my advice to job seekers is to try to apply for a data science position in an area of your real interest. Finally, never give up. No matter how confused or confused you are, stick to it, because there is light at the end of every tunnel.
