What kind of work can you take the entrepreneurial route in the future?

Many people in the workplace, although working in a certain company, still hope to be able to do their own business in the future.

the reason is simple:

1. Don't trust the company:

The restructuring of state-owned enterprises that year employees laid off, let a generation of people lose trust in state-owned enterprises.

The layoffs of foreign companies that began in 2008 and the winter of the Internet in 2018 have also made many professionals find that their career life cannot be entrusted to the company. At a certain point in time, because of different goals, companies may choose to abandon Yourself.

Instead of this, the purpose of working now is to prepare for future entrepreneurship.

Here comes the problem:

What kind of job is suitable for entrepreneurship in the future?

Recently, everyone on Zhihu is discussing " If a 35-year-old programmer is resigned, he can still take out the outsourcing by himself? Why is it so pessimistic?"

This is a good question. Can programmers accept outsourcing orders and become a startup company?

I don't think it can. The reason is that programmers accept outsourcing orders, which is a typical resource mismatch .

The essence of entrepreneurship is to " integrate resources and bring benefits ."

Resources include:

  • Material resources: such as capital, venture capital;

  • Non-material resources: such as technical resources, license resources (in certain industries with restricted access)

  • Human resources: such as customer resources, high-quality talents

For programmers, the core resource is technical resources. With technology, a moat of corporate revenue can be built through cutting-edge technology.

However, this kind of outsourcing order may be a website today, and it may be a small program tomorrow. It is impossible to build a "moat".

Moreover, the needs of corporate customers change repeatedly. Programmers are often struggling to cope.

The best choice for programmers to start a business is B2C business. For example, make a small program for making posters online, users can use it for free, and programmers can make money through advertising.

Who is suitable for outsourcing or resource business for enterprises?

consultant.

As an old man in a consulting company and headhunting company, many of my old colleagues have started their own entrepreneurial careers. Either start your own business, or start a joint venture with a few colleagues.

In the consulting industry and headhunting industry, it is quite common for consultants to transform their own consulting or outsourcing companies after they have accumulated rich experience to provide consulting services to enterprises.

Moreover, most of the days are going well.
What are the core resources of consultants? Customer resources + technical resources.

Then there is a key difference between consultants and programmers:

The consultant directly connects with the client, and there is a seamless connection between the client and the consultant (even so, our consultants are often not approved). This is not the case for programmers.

The role of a qualified consultant includes:

  • Sales : The project is the consultant who persuades the customer to buy;

  • Product design : Every customer has unique needs, there is no one solution fit all argument, so according to the special needs of customers, consultants must design unique products;

  • Implementation : Your own project, your own product, do it yourself, especially headhunting consultants and training consultants.

  • Project management : If it is a big project that cannot be completed by one person, as a consultant, you must coordinate internal and external colleagues and customer employees to implement the project. You are the person in charge when and who needs to do what.

  • After-sales service : Customers will find you to solve any problems later, and customers only know you.

  • Financial collection : The task of collection is also related to you. Why are the clients of your project unwilling to pay? You must not kneel down?

On the other hand, there is a gap between programmers and customers: product managers, customer operations, and sales teams.

The requirements passed to the programmer are theoretically requirements that have been fully digested.

Although many programmers have the urge to be a product manager, in fact, product managers are not people inside and outside, and they are not people who directly connect with customers.

From customer needs to solutions, in order to improve efficiency, large companies disassemble the team very finely. The more detailed, it means that each person only focuses on his own field, the more efficient.

But this also means that when you leave this system one day, you will find yourself unable to adapt, because the company's powerful system helps you digest many problems and difficulties.

And to leave the company, you need to face this cruel world of Party A alone.

Behind everything that consultants need to do mentioned just now implies one or more capabilities:

  • sales ability

  • Strategic thinking ability

  • Creativity

  • Business practical ability

  • Project management ability

  • leadership

  • Expected management ability

  • Communication skills

  • ……

As a programmer, if you have mastered all these abilities, can you outsource after being fired?

What do you want?

Now that these abilities are available, the company should cry and hold your leg to prevent you from walking. Even if you do not type the code in the company, the value you provide far exceeds that of ordinary employees.

Previously, I did a live broadcast with @大鹏老师 on Zhihu about "Do 35-year-old programmers only have internal scrolls?"

The live broadcast is relatively long, let me summarize it briefly:

As a programmer, doing these things well is of great value to career development:

  • Keep accumulating what you have learned and accumulate it into your own low-level abilities;

  • Don't just look at the work at hand, think about the value and significance of what you do at the company level;

  • Learn to communicate across teams, think from the perspective of other teams, and think about their starting point.

Look at the business from a global perspective

The reason why consultants can do it alone is because they do it themselves from front to back.

I said that I was working for my boss, but I started my own company. Apart from the different invoices issued to customers, the logo on the PPT told to customers is different, but the essential services provided are not different.

If the consultants of large foreign companies do it alone, the price/performance ratio may be higher .

Take a training project as an example. The consultant is responsible for the entire project. The training content is taught by him. The on-site layout is arranged by him in advance. The event poster is arranged by him. The interaction with the exercises after class is designed by him...

He handles all the work, even if the design is not done by himself, he also knows how much the cost is and what trusted suppliers are on the market.

For programmers, if they start their own businesses to provide code outsourcing services for customers, they must step out of the comfort zone of "pure coding" and begin to get involved in some product design logic of the product team;

Talk to the operation department about what kind of products can boost revenue;

Visit customers with the sales team.

When you step out of your work station and reach the height of the company's business to look at problems, the world is completely different.

Learn empathy and empathy

The more fields you cover, the easier it is to understand other people's ways of thinking.

When you look at the sales being ravaged by Party A, you can understand that there is no way for him to respond to his next needs. After all, customers and grandchildren in the market are expecting this.

If you look at the operation team being repeatedly harassed by Party A, you can understand that a lot of their work is on trivial tasks, and they also carry high KPIs. They really need better tools to meet customer needs.

When you look at the product team being rubbed together by the customer and the business team, you may be able to understand the so-called new requirements, not their whim, but the requirements repeatedly suppressed by customers. In order to achieve performance, they have to start drawing some unreliable prototypes. , And then turn around and come back to kneel you.

When you see it clearly, you may not think "Is this product manager an sb?";

It's " What can I do to help these colleagues without doing inefficient work? "

When you think about problems from their perspective and propose solutions that everyone can accept, this is everyone's victory.

Yonatan Zunger, a former Google programmer (senior engineer), once defined an excellent engineer as follows:

"People who don't understand this industry think that the job of an engineer is to type codes in front of a computer. This is the job of a novice engineer.

Engineers are not the art of making tools, but the art of solving problems. To solve problems, you need to understand them.

The ultimate goal of our work is to solve the problems of the external world . These problems are related to people. That means we have to understand people and understand them by understanding how they interact with your system.

A real engineer must understand the product and coordinate resources and cooperate with other teams.

In the final analysis, engineering is cooperation, it is to establish a psychological connection with your customers and colleagues.

If someone tells you that being an engineer does not need to deal with people, then he is a liar. Junior positions are possible, but it is also based on the fact that your boss has spent a lot of time building the social structure of your team so that you can focus on writing code. "

I like this passage very much.

In my opinion, this applies not only to engineers, but also to all business positions.

A true talent can not only complete the work at hand, but also often acts as a lubricant in team communication and a leader in the direction of the team.

Simply put, it is necessary to be able to look up at the general direction of the business, but also to cooperate with colleagues to make excellent projects with excellent leadership.

Is your job suitable for entrepreneurship?

Another question in this sentence is: Are the resources you accumulate through work helpful to your business?

If you are a salesperson, then your resources are customer resources; if you are a technical talent, your resources are technical strength; of course, if you have money at home, it is also a resource; the friends you know are all big cows and resources.

If you hold a certain financial license, then big brother, when do you want to start a business, money and people will come by themselves.

For senior headhunting consultants, starting a business is logical-the client is also yours, and the candidate is also yours. What is lacking is the ability to issue invoices.

For programmers, only technical resources are most likely. Then you need to think about where the customers come from? The resources of enterprise customers are much more difficult than those of C customers.

Programmers can accept orders, they need to find a reliable matching trading platform.

A high-quality platform should never be just a role of matching transactions, it should provide more value, so that customers and programmers can align their expectations, and finally both parties can be satisfied.

Finally, a thought question:

What are the core resources of the firework company Xu Huanshan started in "Thirty Only"?

  1. Technical resources-the blue fireworks that Xu Huanshan thought of;

  2. Customer resources-Gu Jia's ability to handle major customers
