Most printers are compatible with macOS. When adding a printer, macOS will automatically use "Air Print" to connect to the printer or download printer software (also known as printer drivers). If you cannot use the printer you have already added, or you do not see the options you want in the "Print" dialog box, you can add the printer again using different settings or different printer software.
Add a printer with different settings
1. On a Mac, choose Apple menu> "System Preferences", and then click "Printers & Scanners".
2. Select the printer in the list, and then click the remove button.
3. Click the Add button, and if a pop-up menu appears, choose "Add Printer or Scanner".
A dialog box will appear, which lists any IP printers, shared printers, and Open Directory printers on the local network. It may take a minute or two for the printer to appear.
4. Select the printer that appears in the list, and then perform one of the following operations:
Use Air Print: If you use a USB cable to connect to a printer that supports Air Print, click the "Use" pop-up menu, and then choose Air Print.
If "Space Print" does not appear in the pop-up menu, the printer does not support it.
Use printer software installed on your Mac or downloaded from Apple: Click the "Use" pop-up menu, then choose "Select Software."
Use the printer software in a file on your Mac: Click the "Use" pop-up menu, then choose "Other." Select the file and click "Add."
Update printer software
If the printer is not using Air Print, you can use the Software Update preferences to download the latest software. If you do not do this, you may see a message that the software is not available when you connect the printer.
1. On a Mac, choose Apple menu> System Preferences.
2. Click "Software Update".
Install any software updates listed for the printer.
If you cannot find software for your printer using "Software Update", you can contact the printer manufacturer for information. It may be that the printer is not compatible with macOS.
If the printer software provided by Apple is not installed, you may not be able to automatically update the printer software when using "Software Update".
